Level 16

Log in to the server as bandit16 and the password.

The credentials for the next level can be retrieved by submitting the password of the current level to a port on localhost in the range 31000 to 32000. First find out which of these ports have a server listening on them. Then find out which of those speak SSL and which don’t. There is only 1 server that will give the next credentials, the others will simply send back to you whatever you send to it.

I can probably use nmap for this. I consult the man page to find out that the -p lets me specify the ports which are to be scanned.

bandit16@bandit:~$ nmap -p 31000-32000 localhost

Starting Nmap 7.40 ( https://nmap.org ) at 2019-10-07 13:12 CEST
Nmap scan report for localhost (127.0.0.1)
Host is up (0.00014s latency).
Not shown: 999 closed ports
PORT      STATE    SERVICE
31518/tcp filtered unknown
31790/tcp open     unknown

Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 1.25 seconds
bandit16@bandit:~$

The man page also states that it is possible to use the -sV flag to discover the versions of services running on ports (which would tell me if something uses SSL or not).

bandit16@bandit:~$ nmap -p 31000-32000 -sV localhost

Starting Nmap 7.40 ( https://nmap.org ) at 2019-10-07 13:16 CEST

bandit16@bandit:~$

The port 31790 with SSL running on it and nmap complaining about not being able to discover it (and along with that, the fingerprint which includes interesting strings) suggest that that would be a good place to start, so I use s_client to connect to it.

bandit16@bandit:~$ openssl s_client -connect localhost:31790 -quiet
depth=0 CN = localhost
verify error:num=18:self signed certificate
verify return:1
depth=0 CN = localhost
verify return:1
